browse the Gustavus collectionThe Gustavus Collection - Zoffany uses the restrained style of eighteenth century Sweden to influence a wallpaper collection that exudes character, elegance and simplicity. Gustavian style shies away from heavy patterning, with a selective use of French decoration and spacious fresh backgrounds becoming part of its charm. Zoffany Gustavus echoes this freshness and restraint, reintroducing a look that typifies its period yet perfectly fits with the modern day interior. In Sweden, during the reign of King Gustav III (1771 – 1792), travel to foreign countries was the privilege of the wealthy nobility. The King himself spent time in France where he acquired a passion for the then newly fashionable Neo-Classical style. The subsequent influence of elegant French classical style (French brocades, arabesques and damasks) produced a fresh take on Sweden’s established approach to interiors. The stunning combination of elegant French formality and an unassuming Swedish simplicity has inspired the Zoffany design studio to create a series of wallpapers in homage to this Gustavian style. Additionally, by using modern printing techniques and rich opaque pigments, the Zoffany studio has captured the authentic textures of natural wood and rough plaster in wallpaper design.
